More than 90% of new cars sold this year had air conditioning systems fitted as standard. The system cools the passenger cabin during warm weather and helps de-mist in winter by removing excess moisture in damp conditions.
Whilst the modern car A/C system is both efficient and reliable, it requires periodical servicing and maintenance in order to maintain its performance. Almost all vehicle manufacturers now recommend a periodic aircon service
Does the air conditioning system affect fuel economy ?
The air conditioning system is normally driven by a belt from the engine. This means that, when switched on , an extra load is placed upon the engine .Generally, a small increase in fuel consumption and a small decrease in engine performance are the result.
How often should an air conditioning system be used ?
Just like most motor vehicle manufactures ,we recommend that the air conditioning systems should be switched on for at least ten minutes once a month. This helps prevent damage to the system due to lack of lubrication. This is supported by a recent press release from Lex Vehicle Leasing which explains that a large proportion of failures are caused by lack of use in winter ,sometimes resulting in costly repairs
What maintenance is required ?
We recommend all air conditioning systems are serviced at least every two years. Low gas levels in the system will lead to poor performance from your air conditioning. You may notice in the summer the air from the vents is not as cold as before ,or in the winter the windows are beginning to mist up even when the air conditioning is switched on. This would indicate that your vehicle is need of attention. At N.R.K Services, we can carry out regas & any repair work. All our technicians are F gas trained which means they are certified to work on air con systems.
